Stainless steel 316 is arguably the classic marine-grade stainless, adding molybdenum over 304 for superior resistance to chlorides and reducing acids.
Stainless steel 316 shares 304's 18% chromium, 8% nickel base but adds molybdenum. This gives it meaningfully better resistance to chlorides, pitting, and reducing acids like sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid – the reason it's known as marine-grade stainless.
Mechanical strength is very similar to 304, so grade selection typically comes down to corrosion resistance rather than structural capacity.
Stainless steel 316 is suited to marine hardware, chemical processing equipment, food and pharmaceutical equipment, and medical/surgical instruments.
