Tool Steel W1 ships annealed and highly machinable, and is the simplest and most economical tool steel, water-hardened afterward for applications without demanding heat or wear requirements.
W1 is supplied annealed, and is among the softest, most machinable tool steels, with little to no significant alloying beyond carbon. It can be water-hardened afterward, developing a hard outer case while the core stays tougher, which can be useful for parts wanting a wear-resistant surface without full-section brittleness.
It's more prone to cracking or warping during hardening than alloy tool steels, and isn't suited to use above roughly 150 °C once hardened.
Tool steel W1 is suited to shafts, pins, hand tools, reamers, embossing taps, and general short-term wear applications.
