What Is Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Sheet metal fabrication is a subtractive and forming process that involves cutting, bending, assembling, and post-processing metal sheets into various shapes and structures. It's a versatile technique used in many industries to create everything from small components to large machinery parts.

The Processes

Cutting

Laser cutting involves a high-powered, CNC-controlled laser beam that melts material to create intricate 2D designs. Plasma cutting uses an accelerated jet of hot plasma to cut through conductive metals. Shearing uses large blades to apply extreme pressure and "snap" metal along a straight line. Waterjet cutting is a "cold-cutting" process that uses a high-pressure stream of water mixed with abrasives to slice through metal, while preventing thermal distortion.

Forming

Sheet metal forming involves shaping metal sheets through processes like bending, stretching, and pressing, allowing for the creation of complex and customized geometries.

Bending is the most common forming method, often using CNC press brakes to deform the sheet along a straight axis. Stamping uses a press and custom dies to "stamp" a shape, texture, or pattern into the metal. Rolling passes metal through a series of rollers to reduce thickness or create cylindrical and conical shapes, while spinning rotates a metal disc on a lathe while a tool progressively shapes it against a mandrel to form axisymmetric hollow parts.

Joining

Sheet metal joining refers to techniques like welding, riveting, or using adhesives to securely assemble separate metal pieces into a unified, durable structure.

Welding uses intense heat and pressure to bond metal sections. Common methods include Metal Inert Gas (MIG), which is fast and versatile; Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), which is precise for thin alloys; and Laser Welding, which offers high consistency with minimal thermal distortion. Mechanical fastening involves the use of rivets, screws, bolts, or industrial adhesives to connect parts.

Finishing

Final treatments enhance the part's appearance, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Surface finishing includes powder coating (adding a durable color layer), anodizing (electrochemical protection for aluminum), and bead blasting (uniform matte texture). Heat treatment refers to processes like annealing or tempering, which are used to adjust the material's hardness or internal stress after fabrication.
