Stainless Steel 201 is a chromium-manganese-nickel austenitic alloy developed as a lower-cost, nickel-conserving alternative to 304. CNC machined 201 offers good tensile strength and formability at lower material cost than 304 or 316L, but noticeably weaker corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides and humid or acidic conditions. While not recommended for marine, outdoor, or long-term food-contact parts, it's better suited to indoor fittings, decorative housings, brackets, and general mechanical components where cost outweighs corrosion needs.
