Brass C46400, also known as naval brass, is a copper-zinc alloy with a small tin addition. The tin improves its corrosion resistance in seawater, including against dezincification, which can affect plain 60/40 brass.
Brass C46400 (naval brass) is a 60/40 copper-zinc alloy with 0.5–1% tin. The tin addition improves resistance to dezincification and seawater corrosion compared with plain 60/40 brass, while strength stays similar. It also resists wear, fatigue, galling and stress corrosion cracking, and has a low tendency to seize in plain bearings.
It should not be used in contact with ammonia, ammonia compounds, or amines, which can cause stress corrosion cracking.
Typical parts include marine hardware, propeller shafts, valve stems, bushings, nuts, bolts and fittings.
