Stainless Steel 444 is a molybdenum-added ferritic alloy with corrosion resistance approaching 316L, and it's essentially immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
444 is a low-carbon, dual-stabilized (titanium/niobium) ferritic stainless steel with 18% chromium and 2% molybdenum. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance rivals 316L in many environments, and being ferritic, it's not susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking – a common failure mode for austenitic grades in hot water systems.
It has limited weldability for dynamic or impact-loaded structures and can become brittle after prolonged exposure in the 400-500 °C range.
Stainless Steel 444 is suitable for hot water tanks, heat exchanger tubing, desalination equipment, and food/beverage processing gear.
