Stainless Steel 420J2 is a heat-treatable martensitic alloy that offers good machinability as-milled, with the option to harden to 50–55 HRC afterward.
420J2 is a martensitic stainless steel that's soft and machinable in the annealed condition, but can be quenched and tempered afterward to reach 50-55 HRC hardness with tensile strength up to about 1,500–1,600 MPa.
Its corrosion resistance is moderate, and it's good in mild atmospheres and many chemicals, but is not suited to marine or heavily chloride-exposed environments. It's magnetic in all conditions.
Stainless Steel 420J2 is suitable for cutlery, surgical instruments, and moderate-wear mechanical components where post-machining hardening is planned.
