Invar 36 (4J36) is the classic 36% nickel-iron alloy famous for its extremely low thermal expansion up to about 200 °C.
Invar 36 (Fe-36Ni) is a low-expansion alloy that has mechanical properties that are broadly similar to low-carbon steel. It is corrosion resistant in dry air but can rust in humid conditions.
This material is suitable for precision instruments, optical benches, seismic gauges, and cryogenic gas storage and piping.
