Brass C48500, also known as high-leaded naval brass, is a tin-bearing brass with added lead. The tin gives it seawater corrosion resistance comparable to brass C46400, while the lead makes it a common choice for machined parts.
Brass C48500 (high-leaded naval brass) contains about 60% copper, 37.5% zinc, 1.8% lead and 0.7% tin.
Like brass C46400, its tin content improves resistance to seawater corrosion and dezincification, and it resists wear, fatigue, galling and stress corrosion cracking. The lead addition makes it better suited to machined parts than C46400. Because of the lead, it can be soldered or brazed but not welded.
Typical parts include marine hardware, valve stems, fasteners, light bearings, gears and screw-machine parts.
